Why is everyone using an OTG-Y cable?

Just wanted to get a feel for who is using the OTG-Y cable and why they're using it. My WN722N works fine with an unpowered cable. If people are having trouble I can write up what I am doing to get it to work with an unpowered OTG.

Some kernels will not recognize the external wifi without a y-cable. Also, how do you plan on running a reaver attack without powering your device for the 3 - 13 hours it can take to crack? Having external power is key.

Binky's Kernel works just fine without a y-cable. My external wifi is recognized and powered. I will test the battery life today and see how long it last's.

*update* Went 11 hours today powering the external wifi with no problems. Honestly, if you're somewhere any longer than that, why even bother with a mobile pen testing platform? Might as well bring a desk, place some picture frames on it, and then go discuss sports around the water dispenser.

if not a y-cable then at least a usb hub. What if you want to use more than one usb device? For example a usb drive + wifi device + bluetooth device + power bank? Like delphi7 said what if you are doing a long crack, that is a great example...

whatever works for you is great but there are reasons for everything i guess...

Right on. I was just making sure people were using it for the right reasons. On some forums I saw that people were saying that using an OTG Y cable it the only way to get the Nexus 7 to recognize the external wifi...which is an incorrect statement.

*edit* nvm ignore post

*edit again*

How do you make it work consistently? Mine seems to be a hit and miss.

Ok, here is the trick...

**ONE time step** Download and install USB OTG Helper (not sure how much this helps but in the pwnie express manual it recommends this step.)

When you are booting into cyanogen mod watch the wifi adapter and make sure the green LED blinks a couple of times, at this point you know it's going to work.
As soon as you boot, run WPA Setup and you will see the script detect the device and communicate with it. Once it cycles twice, you can close the terminal and you should be good to go. You will notice the green light blinks more often.

With this method my external wifi has worked consistently without a powered OTG cable or powerbank every single time I have seen the LED blink. I think the times the external wifi doesn't blink is probably due to the fact that i'm using a cheap 5$ OTG cable and it just isn't getting a good connection. (At this point, I reseat the connections and reboot and it works.)

@delphi7i tried your method, but for me the green LED doesn't blink while booting cm but when i check on lsusb it detects the adapter. Yet on iwconfig wlan1 doesn't show up. Even WPA Setup cannot detect it. My method before was to just plug in the adapter and wait for some time then it becomes magically detected for some reason. The problem probably is i'm using a cheap OTG cable too i'll try to use a different one and see if it works.
