SSH into CE errors out; SSH into pwnpad CE errors out

Using Nexus 7 2013 wifi only and the proper version of CE for that device.

After starting SSHD either via the app button or command line, any attempt to ssh into the pwnpad fails. If I use the incorrect password I get the expected "Permission denied, please try again" message but if I use the correct password I get "Could not chdir to home directory /home/pwnie: Permission denied. /bin/bash: Permission denied" While troubleshooting this I discovered I get similar errors if I try to sudo pwnie from the pwnpad.

Also created new user test and get same errors when trying to access that account.

After several days of t'shooting I decided perhaps it was a bad install so did a completely fresh install last night (not the Factory Reset) and am still getting the same results. Also couldn't get reverse shell working but have forgotten the specifics of that, it was too long ago. One problem at a time :)

TIA for any advice

Forgot to mention, running strace shows many Permission Denied errors, all seemingly related to EACCES

Can someone check the MD5 listed on the download page for PwnPad 2014? It hasn't matched the actual download for some time. I reported it a couple of weeks ago and they said the MD5 listed on the site was wrong and they'd update it but they haven't yet. Wondering if there's a bad tar.xz at Sourceforge and that's the cause of my problem.
